About

Madeline Smith

I'm a health and politics reporter at the Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun. Some of my older work is available here, and you can see more recent articles on my Postmedia author pages (here and here) or my clippings.me page.

Before that, I was on the municipal politics beat at Calgary city hall with the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun, after joining the newsroom at the now-defunct StarMetro Calgary. I covered everything from Calgary's defeated 2026 Olympic bid to the swift approval of public funds for a new arena less than a year later. I've written in-depth on affordable housing, the opioid crisis and public transit, and I also closely followed the campaign trail during the 2019 provincial and federal elections.

Before that, I spent several years in Toronto, where I wrote and edited for the the Canadian Press, Maclean's and the Globe and Mail.

I graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University's Master of Journalism program in 2016, where my final masters project was a series on palliative care, medical aid in dying and death education.

I've also written for Voice of America in Washington, D.C., Avenue magazine in Calgary, the Edmonton Journal, Torontoist (before it folded) and Vue Weekly (before it also folded).

Aside from reporting, I've also worked communications for an art gallery, and I'm a (lapsed) violinist.
